The conversion to Islam of part of the populations of Asia Minor and the Balkans marked a major rupture in the history of the Eastern Mediterranean. During the 19th and 20th centuries, this phenomenon has generated all the more contrasting reactions as they partook of a political culture marked by the assertion of nation-states with their roots deep in the medieval Christian civilisations. In order to carry out the analysis of identity constructs and to understand the vicissitudes of discourses roused by the existence of an Islam rooted in societies formerly Christian or Jewish, fifteen historians have collaborated in establishing a critical bibliography which gives access to more than 800 studies published between 1800 and 2000 by authors from the Balkans and from other Western schools of history.
