La collection « Patrimoine photographique » de l’École française d’Athènes renoue ici avec son intérêt pour les archives photographiques : après Délos, Thasos, Philippes, les images qui sont reproduites ici nous conduisent sur les pas d’autres archéologues, vers l’Anatolie, le Proche Orient, l’Asie centrale. Si les clichés ne font pas directement partie des archives de l’École française d’Athènes, ils n’en témoignent pas moins de son histoire : en effet, les membres scientifiques de l’École, après avoir appris l’archéologie « à l’école de la Grèce », ont souvent poursuivi leurs enquêtes par-delà ses frontières, à la recherche des différentes formes de l’hellénisme, de ses métissages et de ses mutations. Ainsi, Paul Perdrizet, Henri Seyrig, Daniel Schlumberger, Albert Gabriel, tous liés à l’École française d’Athènes et à l’université de Strasbourg, ont joué un rôle déterminant dans la création des instituts français de recherche archéologique dans le cadre du Mandat français durant l’entre-deux-guerres. Leurs images dialoguent avec celles des archives de l’EFA et de plusieurs instituts, pour restituer le regard de ces chercheurs dans leur attrait pour l’Orient mais aussi leur quête de vestiges archéologiques toujours doublée d’une curiosité pour les hommes et les femmes qui ont accompagné cette exploration. C’est de cette aventure partagée dont témoigne le volume En-quête d’Orient et je sais gré à l’université de Strasbourg et à tous les auteurs de l’équipe organisatrice pour les synergies qui ont permis de rendre visible ces trajectoires hors du commun. Fruit d’un patient travail d’identification et d’éditorialisation de photographies jusqu’alors inconnues, l’enquête nous conduit sur les pas de ces archéologues explorateurs qui, forts de leurs expériences grecques, ont su avant tout regarder un monde dont les mutations transparaissent déjà et rendre visible son patrimoine.
The ‘Photographic Heritage’ collection of the École française d’Athènes (EFA) is pursuing its interest in photographic archives: after Delos, Thasos and Philippi, the images reproduced here lead us in the footsteps of other archaeologists in the direction of Anatolia, the Near East and Central Asia. Although the photographs are not directly part of the archives of the French School at Athens, they nevertheless bear witness to its history: after learning archaeology ‘in the school of Greece’, the scientific members of the School often continued their investigations beyond its borders, in search of the different forms of Hellenism, its hybrids and its mutations. Paul Perdrizet, Henri Seyrig, Daniel Schlumberger and Albert Gabriel, all associated with the French School at Athens and the University of Strasbourg, played key roles in the creation of French archaeological research institutes under the French Mandate in the years between the World Wars. Their pictures converse with those from the archives of the EFA and a number of other institutes, re-telling the way these researchers viewed their attraction to the Orient and their quest for archaeological remains, invariably paired with a curiosity about the men and women who accompanied this exploration. The volume En-quête d’Orient bears witness to this shared adventure, and I am grateful to the University of Strasbourg<br />and to all the authors in the organizing team for the synergies that mean we are now given to see these out-of-the-ordinary journeys. The result of painstaking work to identify and edit hitherto unknown photographs, this investigation or ‘in-quest’ follows in the tracks of these archaeological explorers who, on the strength of their Greek experience, were above all able to look at a world whose changes were in the offing and to render its legacy visible.
Η σειρά δημοσιεύσεων « Patrimoine photographique » της Γαλλικής Σχολής Αθηνών ανανεώνει εδώ το ενδιαφέρον της για τα φωτογραφικά αρχεία: μετά τη Δήλο, τη Θάσο και τους Φιλίππους, οι εικόνες που αναπαράγονται εδώ μας οδηγούν στα χνάρια άλλων αρχαιολόγων, προς την Ανατολία, την Εγγύς Ανατολή, την κεντρική Ασία. Αν και<br />οι φωτογραφίες δεν ανήκουν καθ’αυτές στα αρχεία της Γαλλικής Σχολής Αθηνών, αποτελούν εντούτοις μαρτυρίες για την ιστορία της: πράγματι, τα επιστημονικά μέλη της Σχολής, έχοντας πρώτα διδαχθεί την αρχαιολογία «στη σχολή της Ελλάδας», επεδίωξαν συχνά να επεκτείνουν τις έρευνές τους πέρα από τα σύνορά της, σε αναζήτηση<br />διαφορετικών εκφράσεων του ελληνισμού, των συνυφάνσεων και των μεταλλάξεών του. Έτσι, ο Paul Perdrizet, o Henri Seyrig, o Daniel Schlumberger, και ο Albert Gabriel, όλοι τους συνδεδεμένοι με τη Γαλλική Σχολή Αθηνών και το Πανεπιστήμιο του Στρασβούργου, διαδραμάτισαν καίριο ρόλο στη δημιουργία γαλλικών ινστιτούτων αρχαιολογικής έρευνας στο πλαίσιο της Γαλλικής Εντολής κατά τη διάρκεια του Μεσοπολέμου. Οι εικόνες τους συνδιαλέγονται με εκείνες των αρχείων της Γαλλικής Σχολής Αθηνών και πλήθους άλλων ινστιτούτων, με σκοπό να αποκατασταθεί η οπτική εκείνων των ερευνητών στο πλαίσιο της έλξης τους προς την Ανατολή, αλλά και η αναζήησή τους για αρχαιολογικά κατάλοιπα, πάντοτε παράλληλα με μια περιέργεια για τους άνδρες και τις γυναίκες που συνόδευσαν την εξερεύνηση αυτή. Ως προς αυτήν ακριβώς την κοινή περιπέτεια μας προσφέρει μαρτυρίες ο τόμος En-quête d’Orient και είμαι ιδιαίτερα ευγνώμων προς το Πανεπιστήμιο του Στρασβούργου και προς όλους τους συγγραφείς της οργανωτικής ομάδας για τη συνέργεια που επέτρεψε να καταστούν ορατές οι εξαιρετικές αυτές πορείες. Καρπός μιας υπομονετικής εργασίας ταύτισης και επιμέλειας άγνωστων, έως σήμερα, φωτογραφιών, η έρευνα μας οδηγεί στα χνάρια των εξερευνητών αρχαιολόγων οι οποίοι, εφοδιασμένοι με την ελληνική τους εμπειρία, επεδίωξαν, πρώτα απ’όλα,<br />να στρέψουν το βλέμμα τους προς έναν κόσμο του οποίου οι μεταλλάξεις διαφαίνονταν ήδη και να καταστήσουν ορατή την κληρονομιά του.
