The book explores the diffusion of Egyptian cults – notably those of Isis and Sarapis – around the shores of the Black Sea. Carried by the maritime exchanges of the Greek colonies, reinforced by the involvement of the Ptolemies during the Hellenistic period, and later by imperial propaganda under Roman rule, these foreign beliefs became embedded in local religious practices. The volume thus highlights the presence of these cults in the region, where they persisted until the advent of Christianity.
